The Maniototo Community Plan covers the Maniototo basin and includes settlements such as Ranfurly, Naseby, Patearoa, Waipiata, Gimmerburn, Kokonga, Wedderburn, Oturehua and Kyeburn. Maniototo has felt the effects of the growth experienced throughout Central Otago with both the price of land and houses increasing from lows experienced at the turn of the century.
The total population of the Maniototo is approximately 1,910 people with Ranfurly as the service centre for the basin.
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and sheep farming in particular. The Maniototo area is very reliant on irrigation and water enables the basin to be a productive area. The growth of tourism in the Central Otago and Lakes area is reflected in an increased number of people travelling through the Maniototo. The towns and villages service the needs of visitors associated with the ever popular Otago Central Rail Trail. Heritage has been identified as an important value for the Maniototo combined with its great community spirit.
Some of the key points that came out of the plan include:
- Identifying a range of key heritage sites that could be developed as a heritage trail with clear signage and appropriate interpretation of heritage values.
- Ensure that current events are sustainable with appropriate help to organise these events.
- Develop a long term strategy for the future of the water supply.
- Advocate for water issues in the Maniototo.
- Where there is treated water have a designated tap for rail trail users.
- Advocate for the retention of core services in the area.
- Develop a programme to attract skilled people to meet the needs of the area.
- Inform current and potential accommodation providers about visitor trends, and the quality of service appropriate to meeting those needs.
- Encourage facilities and businesses to be open and provide good services for both visitors and locals.
