Maniototo Area

Step out into big blue sky and tawny brown spaces; pick your way through what’s left of long deserted gold fields; or meander along shady forest and lakeside trails. Discover at your leisure the townships of Naseby and St Bathans where beautifully maintained historic buildings echo a rich and colourful past.

St Bathans

St Bathans is an old gold mining town steeped in history. Linger along the main street which includes the haunted Vulcan Hotel and detour for a longer walk on a loop track that takes you part-way along the side of the Blue Lake.

Naseby Forest

Naseby Forest covers the former sluiced grounds of the Naseby goldfield. and includes many popular walking tracks such as the one along the Mt Ida Water Race. Pull on your walking shoes and take your pick.

Naseby Town

Nestled among grand fir, larch and specimen trees is Naseby another former gold mining town perfect for a walking tour. Grab a map from the information centre and discover the Victorian and mud brick buildings dotted throughout the township.

Sowburn

The Sowburn Walk is a pleasant, easy stroll to remnants of an old Chinese gold mining settlement. A loop walk beginning in Patearoa following the banks of the Sowburn river, it passes historic gold tailings and huts, and provides the opportunity to swim safely in a fantastic natural setting.
