Clyde

Clyde is a beautifully preserved, historic township offering the best of Central Otago hospitality.

Originally known as Dunstan, Clyde lies beside the mighty Clutha River amongst a rugged landscape dotted with dark schist rocks and swaying tussocks. It is also home to the awesome Clyde hydro electric dam.

Just 10 minutes northwest of Alexandra, this gorgeous Central Otago town was born of gold, fruit trees and the Otago Central Railway. It is the official start (or end) of the Otago Central Rail Trail and the surrounding area produces some of the country’s finest wine.

In 1862, prospecting miners Hartley and Riley headed to the banks of the Clutha River alongside Clyde. After picking up nuggets relatively easily on the sandy beaches of the river a ‘rush’ soon followed. There were 28 pubs and 30 opium dens recorded. At its peak, the mining community swelled to 14,000 people.

Now a delightful and intact historic precinct, Sunderland Street is a gem to explore. See the stone walls and curbsides, the Dunstan Times Building, Hartley Arms Hotel, the town hall/lodge, Dunstan House, Dunstan Hotel, the former Benjamin Naylor General Store, post office, court house and Clyde Railway Station all standing proud and strong so many years on.

Walks showcase the history behind the remaining buildings and another easy lookout walk encompasses the township, Clutha River and the hydro electric dam.

Indulge in seasonally fresh fruits and local wines. Take a wine trail, town tour; do some relaxing fishing or take a refreshing swim. The annual Clyde Wine and Food Festival is held on Easter Sunday and Clyde is a special place to see in the new year.
