Building Consents

Between 1999 and 2007 the value of building consents increased by 25% per annum on average. This has largely been driven by residential building consents in Cromwell and Vincent (Alexandra, Clyde and surrounds) Wards.

However, for the last three financial years the value of building consents has decreased by up to 20% per annum. The value of building consents across the district is now 50% of the amount recorded in 2007. The first six months of the 2011 financial year (July 2011 to June 2010) indicate that the value of consents has now stabilised.

Vincent Ward has been responsible for the largest number of consents while Cromwell has been responsible for the largest value. Building consent figures reflect both new construction and improvements. Cromwell has been the hotbed of new housing starts, while Alexandra has relatively seen more improvement work.

The main driver has been residential work. The value of this dwarves the other categories such as commercial or rural.
