Track and Walks in the Alexandra & Clyde Area

The range of walks in the Alexandra and Clyde basin means there is an option to please everyone - from short meandering tracks steeped in history to day-long trails through isolated gorges of spectacular scenery, the walks in Alexandra and Clyde have it all.

Walk on the wild side or back in time along trails in the Clyde and Alexandra basin. The Alexandra to Clyde River Track and the Lake Roxburgh to Doctors Point walk both provide contrasting views and scenery alongside the mighty Clutha River. A walk around Flat Top Hill will get you up close and personal with some of the special plants and wildlife of this well preserved dryland ecosystem. For a touch of heritage and history the Clyde Historic Walk provides an enjoyable walk down Memory Lane guaranteed.

Historic Clyde

Take a ramble around Historic Clyde with a ‘Walk Around Historic Clyde’ brochure. On this easy one hour walk within central Clyde you’ll soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era as you pass many original stone buildings.

Lake Roxburgh - Doctors Point

This downstream Clutha River track is in complete contrast to the upstream Anniversary Track walk. It’s a rugged, lonely landscape punctuated with relics of the past. The full return trip is 20km and the shorter trip to Butchers Point 8km.

Shaky Bridge

It’s a short, sharp but enjoyable jaunt over the aptly named Shaky Bridge and up a schist and thyme track to the Alexandra clock. Both the bridge and the illuminated hillside timepiece are local icons that are well worth inspection on foot.

150th Anniversary Walk

The 150th Anniversary Track is a popular and easily accessed walking and cycling track. It’s an easy 12.8km walk following the Clutha River upstream through the historic Earnscleugh tailings. The track, which is signposted at Alexandra 300m along Earnscleugh Road, finishes at the Clyde Bridge.

Flat Top Hill

You can follow the track or ‘freedom walk’, accessed from the Alexandra side of Butchers Dam. The main track takes about 40 minutes and has information boards along the way explaining the animals and plant life of this special dryland ecosystem.
