Located at the southern end of the Ida Valley, these original historic schist stone huts let you step back in time to experience the gold mining era.
The accommodation is simple with a rural outlook, often shared with sheep and horses.
Inside the first hut you’ll find a double bed bunk, and a single bed, all located within the open plan lounge/cooking area. A gas cooker is available in the kitchen space, firewood for the fire is provided and water is supplied in containers from the Homestead. A hot shower is available at the main house, just five minutes walk away, and a phone is available if required.
The second stone hut has a double and a single bed, with a potbelly wood-burning stove to keep you warm.
The huts are located a stone’s-throw from the Old Dunstan Road, an early route to the Central Otago goldfields between Dunedin and Dunstan (Clyde) in the 1860s. It is believed gold was stored in one of the huts where old padlocks have been found in the stables next door.
Walk through the Moa Creek ruins and goldmining relics. This is truly a remote and peaceful location and a perfect base for a Lord of the Rings Tour.
Visit the set of Rohan from the second movie, The Two Towers. Experience the real scenes of the village – hobbits dropping the leaf, Aragorn hunting for the Hobbits, and the horse scene with Eomer asking "What business does an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark?”
